Whatever she decides, she knows her life will never be the same.

I have been wanting to read Becoming Nikki for a long time…ever since I saw the author’s interview on Homeschooled Authors. The plot intrigued me, as did the fact that the book was about sibling relationships.
But wow.
This book totally took me by surprise.

Plot/Storyline: 5/5
I was completely riveted by this book from the first page. The entire plot was so well executed and realistic.

Characters: 4/5
I loved the characters…well, except for the ones I didn’t like. But I’m pretty sure those ones were supposed to be disliked.
My only gripe is that I wish Nikki and Alec’s dad had been a more significant part of the story.

Writing: 5/5
It was amazing. Absolutely unheard of for a debut novel.

Dialogue: 4/5
Sometimes, it was hard to understand what the characters were trying to say. Elliot used real-life lingo/slang, which made it sometimes hard to comprehend. But, it is how most people talk these days, I had just never seen it written on paper.

Want-to-read-ability: 5/5
Absolutely couldn’t put it down, it was so good. I had a day off and read the book in about six hours. I wish it had been longer.

I really wasn’t expecting much when I got this book. It sounded cutesy and a bit juvenile from the back cover. I was prepared for so-so writing and a plot that was predictable. What I ended up with was a unique story that was well written and left me cheering for both the story and the author.
While many young authors have published books, few have the talent that Elliott displayed in this story. Her writing is strong, personal, and engaging. I have rarely read a début author that is so young, yet has mastered so many valuable skills as an author. I look forward to seeing many more great books in Elliott’s future.

The story was so delightful. It is not often in the romance saturated market that you find a book that is purely about a brother-sister relationship. Alec and Nikki both have struggles, and they have drifted apart, despite the fact they are an ice dancing team. The struggles that they both face felt very real, as did how they dealt with them.

This book is a contemporary book complete with people texting and using slang, and that made the book feel realistic. However, while it did feel like it was about real kids in today’s culture, it never got crude, and faith and good morals played heavily into the story. There was a little talk of boyfriend/girlfriend relationships, but it was mainly about why it isn’t a good idea when you are too young to date.

There are few books that I have enjoyed reading more this year. It was a pure delight and joy to read, and I highly recommend this for those who like books about sibling relationships, clean fiction, and contemporary stories.

I was given this book by the author. No review, positive or otherwise, was required—all opinions are my own.
I had a really good feeling going into this book. So good that I waited until I could afford the hard copy rather than trying it out on . And even as high as my expectations were, I was absolutely blown away.

In one word--beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. This book was without question the sweetest, loveliest, most poignant sibling love story that I've ever read. Yes, I know the romance market co-opted that term a long time ago, but I'm taking it back. Because this book is every bit a love story in the truest sense of the word.

The characters felt entirely real from the very first page. Nikki's tangled emotions that seemed to jump ahead and circle back on themselves with lightning speed didn't come across as inconsistent characterization but as a very accurate portrayal of our own human struggles and inconsistencies. Her relationship with Natalie was excellent and just what the story needed to lighten the emotional burden. I saw shades of my brothers in several places--especially Bennett's cheesy pick-up lines and Sam's liking for period dramas (sorry, guys)--and my whole family in the frequent use of movie quotes in random conversations. Dylan was absolutely wonderful, and I even warmed up to Liam a little (although I'd have been happier if he'd told Kylie off once or twice).

But Nikki and Alec were the heart of the story, and oh, what a heart! I love how well the theme of their first dance routine--"unsure, hesitant love"--fits Nikki's conflict throughout the book. It's her love for her brother and her desire for his love that makes his rejection cut so deeply, and I adore the way that her love shines through even when she's hesitant, angry, or hurt. No matter how confused and wary she becomes when she tries to think things out, her instinct is always to help and protect, no matter how much it might cost her.

And Alec--the real Alec underneath the person he's let himself become--absolutely melts my heart and takes my breath away. The new relationship that he forms with Nikki in the wake of the accident is precious beyond belief. As Nikki and Natalie might quote--"an ideal elder brother, then." D I love that he never gives up on her when she pulls back and hesitates, even though he can't remember what he's done to hurt her. I love his gentle protectiveness and his eagerness to get back to the things they once shared. The last scene had me tearing up from pure sweetness (and sweetness doesn't usually make me teary).

If there was an option for six stars, this book would get it. And even though I have the print book, I now want the version, too, just so I can take it with me everywhere. Huge thanks to Ashley Elliot for an absolutely wonderful story!
